The Savuti

Heading north out of Moremi, through deep sand and undulating hills, you eventually arrive at the Mababe Gate. From here to the Savuti Campsite is a further 65 kms. On a self-drive Safari you have the option of taking one of 2 routes, one via the plains and the other via the sandier bush route. The latter being a better option when wet.
Often described as one of, if not the best, wildlife-viewing area in Africa today. Savuti boasts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife left on the African continent. Animals are present during all seasons, and at certain times of the year their numbers can be staggering. One of the major inhabitants of this area is the Elephant and they can be found in huge numbers the further north that you travel up to Chobe.
The area has all the various species like giraffe, zebra, roan, sable, buffalo, eland, warthog, as well as the predators like lion, hyena, jackal and occasionally cheetah and the ever elusive wild dog.
The campsite at Savuti is not fenced so the wild animals roam freely through the camp. Sometimes they get really close and it is very common to hear lion at night. The ablution block at Savuti has been encased in a huge walled enclosure behind huge steel gates, to keep the elephant out. The campsite overlooks the Savuti River which has not flowed since 1982.
Once again this is one of those places which you need to experience first-hand, as it is truly amazing.
