Maun in Botswana

Our travels took us further north and then east into Botswana until we reached Maun, the hub of the Okavango Delta. Here a diverse population exists and cohabits in a peaceful environment. It is a town with mud huts, goats and donkeys and everything else that rules the road, but also has a 30 million pula sports complex, a 45 million pula state of the art medical hospital. The people vary from poor rural Tswana people, to the yuppie Tswana with their branded clothing, braids and wigs, to all the white expats from RSA, Australia and Britain in their Khaki dress code and bush hats. The tourist industry is booming with no feeling of stress in the town. To us the world was going by in slow motion; nobody exceeds the speed limit of 50km/hour. I guess the slogan for Maun is –“tomorrow is another day” as everything happens at a snail’s pace. If there is no work – no problem we will spend the day sitting and chatting to whomever. They were selling tickets to a beach party at the new sports complex – 40 pula per person with booze and food included. This was the rave of the year and all young ex pats were getting extremely excited.
